About Us

The Mahnomen County Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization that has been a member of the Minnesota Historical Society since 1981.  We represent the communities of Mahnomen, Waubun, Bejou, Beaulieu, and Naytahwaush. We have regular newsletters and regular monthly meetings. The museum is open three afternoons a week during summer.  It is located at 106 N Main Street in Mahnomen.  We have an extensive collection of the Mahnomen Pioneer newspaper on microfilm and are working toward digitizing other documents as funding allows. We actively look for grants and donations for operating funds and to make improvements in our exhibits.
The first meeting to begin the process of saving our local history was initiated by David McCollum in 1981. He became the first president of the organization. In the beginning, they began a museum in the basement of the Mahnomen County Courthouse. The building fund campaign began in 2004-2005, with the purchase of a building in 2006. The Historical Society membership has steadily grown to 300 members. The museum has become a feature of the community since it moved to the Main Street location. In 2007, a generous benefactor, B. C. Ness, paid off our building loan. This freed up our funds for projects and staff.
