Beltrami County Historical Society’s Guided Bus Tour Explores “The New Deal in Beltrami
County” rescheduled for Saturday, August 24
BEMIDJI, MN – May 9, 2024 – Beltrami County Historical Society is thrilled to announce its
upcoming bus tour, “The New Deal in Beltrami County,” is rescheduled for Saturday, August 24.
Sponsored in part by Beltrami County Development Funds, this enlightening excursion will
depart promptly at 10:00 AM from the Beltrami County History Center located at 130
Minnesota Ave. SW in downtown Bemidji. The tour invites participants to embark on a
captivating journey through the rich history of the New Deal era in Beltrami County.
The New Deal, a transformative series of initiatives introduced during the Great Depression by
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, left an indelible mark on American society. Designed to
alleviate economic hardships, the New Deal programs spurred employment, infrastructure
development, and cultural enrichment across the nation. Beltrami County is home to many
New Deal projects, each contributing to the region’s unique heritage.
During the tour, participants will have the opportunity to explore key sites that reflect the
legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and
other New Deal initiatives. Stops include the historic Kelliher Auditorium, the picturesque CCC
Camp Rabideau near Blackduck, the scenic Bemidji State Park, and the iconic Fireplace of
States. Expert guides will provide insights into the significance of these landmarks and the
lasting impact of the New Deal on the local landscape.
To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, participants will travel in a spacious, air-
conditioned bus from Bemidji Bus Lines. Specially guided tours at Camp Rabideau and Bemidji
State Park will offer in-depth perspectives on the craftsmanship and conservation efforts of the
era. Additionally, a delectable CCC-inspired lunch will be provided, allowing guests to savor
flavors reminiscent of the New Deal era.

Beltrami County History Center located at 130 Minnesota Ave SW, downtown Bemidji.
As a seasoned veteran of the airwaves, Dan Gannon brings a wealth of experience and
knowledge to the table. From selecting the perfect playlist to mastering the art of on-air
delivery, Dan will provide attendees with an exclusive glimpse into the daily life of a volunteer
DJ. Whether you’re a radio enthusiast or simply curious about the magic that happens behind
the mic, this program promises to be an engaging and enlightening experience for all.

Beltrami County Historical Society to Close for Strategic Planning Day
Beltrami County, May 7, 2024 – The Beltrami County Historical Society will be closed to the
public on Saturday, May 11, 2024, for a Strategic Planning Day. This closure will enable the
Society’s team to focus on planning future initiatives and improving services.
During this time, staff, volunteers, and board members will collaborate to set goals and
strategies that align with community needs and historical preservation best practices. The
Society aims to enhance its impact and effectiveness through this proactive approach.
Regular operations will resume on Wednesday, May 14.

Author Will Weaver will be in Fosston on Friday, May 17th, as part of a Syttende Mai celebration East Polk Heritage Center is hosting along with Sons of Norway Grandlund Lodge #240. Join us for a reception at 9:30 AM for coffee and Scandinavian treats. Will Weaver will then read from his book and provide book signings beginning at 10:00.

There is no charge for this event, thanks in part to a grant from the MN State Arts Board through the MN Legacy Fund. We hope you can join us to learn more about his story of the journey of a Norwegian family that immigrated to North Dakota in the early 1900s.
